## Why Import an EV from the UK to the Caribbean?

The UK has one of the world's largest second-hand EV markets. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are available at significant discounts compared to buying new in the Caribbean. With Caribbean fuel prices among the highest in the world (often $3–5 USD per litre), switching to electric can generate enormous long-term savings.

Additionally, several Caribbean governments are now offering zero or reduced import duty on EVs to encourage uptake:
- Barbados: 0% import duty on BEVs (as of recent budget — confirm current rate)
- Other islands: duty reductions available — enquire for latest rates

## EV Battery Health Check

- Cell degradation pattern analysis

- DCFC use assessment (fast charging degrades cells over time)

What is good SoH?
- 90%+: Excellent. Near-new performance.
- 80–90%: Good. Minor degradation, usable for years.
- 70–80%: Acceptable for older models or budget buyers. Be aware of reduced range.
- Below 70%: Significant degradation. Not recommended for export.

## Charging Infrastructure — Caribbean

Barbados: Charging stations being rolled out. 240V/16A (Type 2 slow charge) widely available. DCFC (Type 2 fast charge) available in select locations.
Jamaica: Limited DCFC network. Slow charge from 240V outlets common.
Trinidad: Charging infrastructure developing. 240V domestic outlets (single-phase) available.
Cayman Islands: Good infrastructure. Tesla Supercharger present.
Bahamas: Nassau has basic charging infrastructure.

Buyers should expect to primarily charge at home overnight using standard domestic supply. EV importers typically install a dedicated home charge point (approx £500–800 to install in destination country).

## Shipping EVs

All EVs must be shipped with battery State of Charge (SoC) between 20–50% for IMDG (maritime dangerous goods) safety compliance. Batteries should not be shipped fully charged or completely depleted.

Container shipping is recommended (not required) for EVs to protect the battery from sea air and temperature extremes during long voyages.
